Fifteen-year-old Stacy questions the strange world of high school, love, her role in a harsh universe, and life, in Normalish.
People tell you high school's so great and wonderful, but they're lying. It's mostly horrible and full of disappointment. It sucks. Your best friend abandons you. The jerk you're in love with pretends to be into you, and then the big dump. The boy you've really clicked with as a friend decides to go all crushy over you, so you break his heart just like yours was -- smashed into little pieces. Your sister goes mental, and you get involved with a guy who’s even crazier than she is (who you know is a very bad idea, but you do it anyway). Math only adds another stink of failure to the whole thing.
High school blows. Just ask freshman Stacy. She’d want you to know.
First thing's first... I adore this cover. It's so simple, and pretty, and definitely was the first thing to catch my attention.
Normalish is the story of 15-year old Stacy, who begins high school and immediately hates it from day one. Everyone always says high school is a fun time in your life... but for Stacy (probably most other 15-year olds), they are wrong.
Normalish reads as more of a diary-type of story. Each chapter is titled by the date, along with a cute description. Some chapters were less than a page, others several pages. I really enjoyed this concept and it kept the story flowing smoothly.
Boy could I relate with poor lil Stacy! Right from the start I totally felt for her. High school was a tough time for me as well (but definitely NOT as tough as it was for our poor MC!) so I could totally see where she was coming from. All the way down to liking the "cool" kid, but him not liking you back... then it turns out he's a total dirtbag anyway. Then the boy who has always been your BFF suddenly has a crush on you that is totally not reciprocated by your feelings towards him. Add some additional torture, including your sister going completely mental, your meeting a guy that may be more crazy than he's worth, a bit of heartache here and there, and you've got yourself a boatload of drama!!
I would definitely recommend Normalish. I've been really into YA contemporaries lately, and this one definitely didn't disappoint. I look forward to reading more from Margaret in the future!

Everything starts in High School. I think it's one of those definitive moments in our life like if you can survive it you can surely survive modlife crisis or something like that. This book sounds like it's on the same clique as Speechless
ReplyDeleteI've been very curious about Normalish. I like that cover too! I really like that it's told in journal format. I'm glad you liked if. Nice review!
