This week's question:
Question: What New Years Blogging or Writing resolution have you placed on yourself?
Answer: Sadly, my Bloggy New Years Resolution this year is to take on fewer review requests from authors, maybe a few less promotional posts, and maybe not as many weekly memes. I am contacted almost daily about reading books for authors, and because I accepted so many in 2012 my list is still insanely long. I hate making authors wait so many months for a review. I just feel that if I take on a review request, I should be able to complete it in a month or two. And I haven't been able to do that. Fewer promotional posts and weekly memes will leave me more time for reading, thus reviewing, which is what I planned when I originally started my blog.
On top of that, my review pile is sooooo big that I tend to feel pressure at times about reading. I started my blog for fun, and I really don't want it to ever become "work" or something that I don't enjoy doing as much as I want to. I NEED to have free time to spend with my family and friends, outside of my full-time job. I spend more than 40 hours a week working, on top of my lengthy commute during the week, so that leaves very little time left for everything else. And when I feel pressure to read when I would rather be doing something else, that feeling really upsets me. I want to enjoy reading, as I always have my whole life. And I don't ever want to neglect my family.
So after that REALLY long answer (sorry!!) I regret to say that I will be taking on less via review requests, weekly memes and promotional posts. This will leave me more time to spend with my family, as well as read books that come out that I am so eager to read, without feeling obligated to read others in my ever-growing review pile. Sorry authors... I will try to be as helpful as possible in promoting your books and help you any way I can, but please don't take it personally if I don't accept your review request. I need to spend at least the first part of 2013 getting my review pile smaller, which will relieve some of the stress on my shoulders. Thank you to all of the authors that have been so patiently awaiting my reviews... they are coming, I promise! :)

We are on the same page, Lisa. More time reading the books we're super excited for and more time for family! :) Also, I see you're reading Meant to Be. That was one of my favorite reads of 2012! How are you liking it?
ReplyDeleteAgreed! :) Meant to Be... totally loving it! I'm only about 15% in, but already it's great. I'm a huge contemporaries fan though, which I know you said you really aren't... so the fact that you loved it means a lot! I'm listening to Stat Prob of Love at First Sight audiobook too... totally diggin it! Two great books at the same time... can't beat it! :)
DeleteIt's a great resolution. I'm also trying to stay away from requesting new books on Netgalley, since I have a pile waiting for me already. Sometimes it's such a shame that there are so many good books and only so little time every day to read.

Definitely too many books, too little time. Netgalley is amazing... but like you said, I download too many books too and the pile just keeps getting bigger and bigger. We have a tough job, us book bloggers!! Haha! :)
DeleteNetgalley is an addiction I refuse to give up.

I don't think I could ever give it up either. Netgalley = pure awesomeness. I just need to be a bit more picky about what I download, as my pile just keeps growing... and growing... :)
DeleteGreat resolution! More time for reading the books I love is one of the things I seriously need this year... but my pile just keeps growing, and there's never enough time for them all. :)
ReplyDeleteHere's my F&F
New GFC follower, btw :)
Best of luck to you in your resolutions!! I don't usually take on too many review books. It's not that I am being mean, but when I read what the book is about I don't see anything appealing in it for me. I even post on my review policy that I basically read paranormal books and yet I will get requests that don't have a strong paranormal element!
ReplyDeleteYet my personal TBR pile is wayyy out of control! Even scarier is that there is stuff on my kindle, but it's hard knowing how much is there since I cannot physically see them all!
Here's my Follow Friday
Have a GREAT weekend!

Taking on less is probably better on stress levels too and of course family comes first. Awesome resolution :)
